Tips For Cleaning And Maintaining Granite Countertops

Home & Garden Blog

If you're remodeling your home and are wondering what type of countertops you'd like, you can't go wrong with granite. Not only is granite hardy and durable, but it will also give any kitchen an updated, modern look.

Granite is an all-natural material composed of minerals, such as quartz and feldspar, which give it strength and long-lasting durability. Once granite is treated with an appropriate finish, it's also highly resistant to scratching, making it the ideal kitchen countertop material. Although you'll still need to be careful with granite to keep it looking its best, it will typically withstand slips of a knife and normal wear and tear.

Since granite countertops are composed of natural stones, they come in a wide range of different colors and patterns. Quartz ranges in color from dark back and grey to pink and green tones. You'll have no problem picking out the granite countertops that best match your kitchen and color preferences.

Although authentic granite countertops may be a bit pricier than other options — such as laminate, tile, soapstone, and concrete — both their appearance and high quality may make the home investment worth it. After they're installed, make sure you properly care for them to get the most out of your money.

Here are some tips for cleaning and maintaining granite countertops:

1. Clean Up Spills

It's important to clean up any spills on your granite countertops as soon as possible. Although the counters are generally treated with a stain-resistant finish, some liquids, such as red wine, can still leave marks if they're allowed to set in.

Simply use a soft towel, such as a microfiber cloth, to absorb the liquid. Follow up with a general spray cleaner that is approved for use on granite to remove any residual stickiness. You can also use this cleaner to wipe up food crumbs or other debris on a daily basis.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Since granite is a natural material, avoid using any harsh chemicals on them. Acidic substances such as ammonia- and bleach-based cleaners can damage the countertop finish. If you want to use a vinegar solution to kill germs, make sure it is properly diluted with water, as vinegar can break down the granite sealant over time.

Also, avoid using abrasive cleaning tools, such as steel wool, which can leave unsightly scratches on the countertops. Use soft brushes and cloths instead, and always make sure the countertops are wiped thoroughly dry to avoid water spots.

Lawn Care Maintenance: A Year Round Effort

Most of us take great pride in our homes and do everything we can to ensure its beauty and comfort. While attending to our home's interior, we sometimes tend to neglect the lawn, especially during winter. Since moving into my "dream home" I feel compelled to maintain the lawn and garden as impeccably as I do the interior. That's why I've hired a lawn care team to see that my landscape is in tip-top shape all year round. I've learned the importance of fertilization during the late fall and early winter. Keeping the lawn trimmed during those cold winter months will help, too. The experts even help prepare my lawn for the upcoming spring. During this time, family celebrations and parties are plentiful, and I plan to have the best looking lawn on the block. I can't wait for spring to come!
