5 Tips To Prevent An Ant Infestation In Your Home

Home & Garden Blog

When it comes to pests, few are as annoying as ants. If you have an ant infestation in your home, you won't just see a few ants here or there--you are likely to see huge groups of ants traveling back and forth in a never ending line. But you don't have to share your house with ants. Use the following tips to prevent an ant infestation in your home:

Put Away All Food and Make Sure It is Sealed

The promise of food is the reason that ants infiltrate homes, so you can make you house undesirable to ants by ensuring that there is no food for them to find. Avoid storing any food on the counter and make sure any open packages of food in your pantry are sealed shut with a clip or put into a storage container with a lid. If you have pets in the home, make sure you pick up their food bowl after meals.

Always Clean Your Counter Tops

While your counters may appear clean, any crumbs or small spills of food or drinks can become ant magnets. It is a good idea to spray your counter with multi-purpose cleaner and then wipe it down carefully to remove all traces of what ants may consider a food source.

Avoid Leaving Dirty Dishes in the Sink

Dirty dishes typically have small remnants of left over food of them, which can attract ants. If you want to do whatever you can to keep ants out of your home, make an effort to wash your dishes after use, or rinse the dishes and put them in the dishwasher.

Don't Provide a Water Source for Ants

Like any other living creature, ants need water to survive, so puddles or leaks in your home can draw ants in. Fix any leaky faucets and take the extra time to make sure that there is no water on your kitchen counters after doing dishes, or on your bathroom counter after washing your face or brushing your teeth. Just a little bit of effort can prevent you from having to deal with a frustrating ant infestation.

Utilize Ditchotomous Earth

Ditchotomous earth is a powder that is made up of silica; it is completely safe for humans and pets, but kills insects with exoskeletons. Consider sprinkling ditchotomous earth around the exterior of your home to help keep ants away. You can also finely sprinkle it on windowsills and baseboards so if any ants do make it into your home they won't live too long and set up a nest.

Lawn Care Maintenance: A Year Round Effort

Most of us take great pride in our homes and do everything we can to ensure its beauty and comfort. While attending to our home's interior, we sometimes tend to neglect the lawn, especially during winter. Since moving into my "dream home" I feel compelled to maintain the lawn and garden as impeccably as I do the interior. That's why I've hired a lawn care team to see that my landscape is in tip-top shape all year round. I've learned the importance of fertilization during the late fall and early winter. Keeping the lawn trimmed during those cold winter months will help, too. The experts even help prepare my lawn for the upcoming spring. During this time, family celebrations and parties are plentiful, and I plan to have the best looking lawn on the block. I can't wait for spring to come!
